I’ve been listening to a recently-released book titled ‘What Would Google Do?’, and it is a fascintating look at how Google has impacted business, what businesses can do to be more like Google, and lots of other-things Google.

The Grand Caravans, 300s and Chargers could be rolling off the assembly lines at Chrysler assembly plants here within three weeks after a two-month shutdown as the company’s parent pulls out from bankruptcy court protection with a new partner.

Although Chrysler wouldn’t confirm dates, the Canadian Auto Workers said Wednesday that company officials have suggested to them they want to reopen the minivan plant in Windsor, a big car operation in Brampton and an engine casting factory in suburban Etobicoke by Monday, June 29.

“There’s no official notification yet but we are optimistic the plants will be up and running by the end of the month,” s aid Jerry Di

as, a CAW senior official. “The company hopes to start by then.”

About 8,700 production and skilled workers at Chrysler operations here have been off the job since the end of April when the parent company gained temporary court protection from creditors in the U.S. Thousands of other workers at scores of parts makers who supply the assembly plants have also remained idle.

Chrysler had wanted to build autos during a 30-60 day bankruptcy period, but the uncertainty about the process and payment prompted some edgy suppliers to stop deliveries. It disrupted operations here and in the U.S. where about 27,000 other workers are also on layoff.

Chrysler spokespersons said Wednesday they had no information on specific reopening dates at individual plants in Canada or the U.S.

Dias, assistant to CAW national president Ken Lewenza, said it is clear Chrysler wants to put the bankruptcy proceedings behind the company and start to build vehicles as soon as possible to improve consumer confidence.

Chrysler sales crashed in Canada and the U.S. last month, partly because of uncertainty surrounding the company’s future, according to industry watchers.

Dias said Chrysler has already recalled some staff to ease the transition to manufacturing work practices from Italian automaker Fiat SpA, Chrysler’s new partner.

“We’ve already incorporated a lot of the lean manufacturing techniques so it shouldn’t be too difficult,” he added.

Last week, Lewenza suggested Chrysler might be running into some shortages of minivans and other models but management left him with the impression Wednesday afternoon that the company could let inventories decline more before resuming production.

“I thought it would be by the 29th but they haven’t confirmed anything yet,” he noted.

The company emerged from court protection earlier in the day with Fiat the new owner of most of its assets, including the Canadian operations.

Chrysler announced that Fiat chief executive officer Sergio Marchionne, who grew up in Toronto, would also head the company.

Marchionne spoke to senior staff at Chrysler’s headquarters in Auburn Hills, Mich., about the company’s push to implement Fiat’s fuel-efficient technologies in smaller cars in North America and develop a new corporate culture.

“He told us bureaucracy doesn’t build cars,” said Lewenza, who heard Marchionne’s speech. “He really emphasized the need for less managers and the need for everyone to help change the culture.”

Chrysler could receive about $15 billion in loans from the U.S. government, and another $3.8 billion from Ottawa and the province to help it recover from the worst industry slump in decades.

The company announced several management changes, including the appointment of president Jim Press as deputy chief executive, and individual presidents for the Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep brands. Reid Bigland, Chrysler Canada’s chief executive officer, will remain in his currrent post.

Chrysler chief executive officer Bob Nardelli informed staff of his departure while Stephen Landry, executive vice-president of North American sales and a former chief executive of Chrysler Canada, confirmed his retirement. Vice-chairman Tom LaSorda, a Windsor native, retired last month.

Under Chrysler’s new ownership structure, Fiat will hold up to 35 per cent; the United Auto Workers in the U.S., 55 per cent; the American government, 8 per cent, and the federal and Ontario governments, 2 per cent.

Earlier in the week, the company overcame the last hurdle in bankruptcy proceedings when the U.S. Supreme Court declined to rule on objections from some pension funds that the sale to Fiat favoured some unsecured creditors over secured debtholders.
